I have completed a series of courses where I learned Motivational Interviewing (MI). For those who are not familiar with MI, it is an evidenced-based, patient-centered approach to create behavioral change for health promotion; primary, secondary, and tertiary prevention and to improve adherence with physical and emotional health conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and depression. I incorporate MI in my mental health counseling practice and have expanded it to work with others as a coach. I have been board certified as an Advanced Holistic Nurse (AHN-BC) for over 10 years. My certification was recently renewed until 2017. Holistic nursing is recognized by the American Nurses Association as a specialty practice. Certification grants recognition to nurses who have met specified qualifications and competencies in a defined area of practice—holistic nursing. I also completed a course entitled From Counseling to Coaching with Harlene Anderson, PhD, and Diana Carlton, PhD, at the Houston Galveston Institute.

I have skills and training to coach in three specific coaching areas. They are

· Health and Wellness Coaching

I work with individuals to promote health and wellness, prevent disease and stabilize and support chronic conditions such as diabetes, heart disease, and depression. My holistic nursing and counseling background offer a unique perspective to assist clients to make psycho-neuro-social-spiritual changes for health and healing.

· Career Coaching

I use my career coaching training to support my clients as they evaluate their current positions, transition to new positions, or enter retirement. Motivational Interviewing techniques are used to explore change, address obstacles and fears, and develop goals to move forward.

· Spiritual Coaching

Sometimes my clients wish to focus on their spiritual development. My holistic background provides support to those who want to explore their specific spiritual practices. I have been a Benedictine Oblate since 2007. A Benedictine Oblate is a lay person who seeks to live a life in harmony with the spirit of Saint Benedict as revealed in the Rule of Saint Benedict and its contemporary expression. I also offer individual or group spiritual direction (spiritual coaching) using the labyrinth as a foundation.
